121 Mentoring Session

The following questions form the basis of the 121 mentoring sessions with students.
These questions are designed to reflect on the work the candidates will do on the course, and additionally, questions on job interviews and reflective of the management environment they will find themselves in when they are placed.
Encourage them to think carefully about their responses. 

Collaboration

  1. Do you like working in a team environment?
  2. Is it more important to be a good listener or a good communicator?
  3. Tell me about a time when you took responsibility for your mistakes.
  4. Tell me about a time when you took on responsibility when working with others.
  5. Tell me about a time when you gave credit to someone else.
  6. Tell me about a time when you were supportive and helpful towards others who were struggling.
  7. Tell me about a time when you advocated for others when they were not being heard.
  8. Describe a conflict you have had. How did you resolve it and what happened next?
  9. Tell me about a time when you were willing to look at things from a different perspective and open to other thoughts and opinions
  10. When you started at futureproof or a previous job, how did you develop strong professional relationships with your new peers?

Reflective

  1. Do you notice areas for improvement within your own abilities? Give an example.
  2. Tell me about a time when you acknowledged your own improvements. Give me an example of when you learnt from your actions.
  3. How do you respond to criticism or feedback?
  4. Have you ever had to point out an error a peer has made in an exercise, review or project work? If so, how did you go about giving constructive feedback and what was the outcome?
  5. How do you actively work on developing your interpersonal skills?

Driven, Resilient, Curious

  1. How do you handle setbacks and how do you find ways to overcome setbacks? Give me an example.
  2. Tell me about a time when you took on constructive feedback as an opportunity to learn and improve.
  3. Tell me about a time when you pushed your own boundaries.
  4. Do you look for opportunities to grow to meet your full potential? Give me an example.
  5. Tell me a time when you did not understand a particular task or not given much detail, what were your first actions and how did you go about seeking clarity?
  6. Are you able to recognise others’ strengths and actively learn from them? Give an example
  7. Tell me about a time you made a mistake and how did you learn from it.
  8. How do you do your research when you have to learn something you have little knowledge in?

  1. How do you prioritise your tasks and projects effectively?
  2. How do you plan and organise tasks for a project?
  3. How do you structure independent work efficiently? Give an example.
  4. When you have a deadline to meet, how do you go about taking the appropriate actions to ensure the deadline is met at a high quality? Give an example.
